Refugee Settlement Visit by the Champion of the African Union Theme of the Year 2019, H.E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, Presideint of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea

Kampala, Uganda, 14 December 2019: The African Union commission Department for Political Affairs organized with the Government of the Republic of Uganda and the Government of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, a Refugee settlement visit in Kiryandongo, Uganda on 14 December 2019.

As part of the Champion's leadership in spearheading the AU Theme of the Year 2019, "the Year of Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced people (IDPs): Towards durables solutions to forced displacement in Africa", H.E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, visited Kiryandongo refugee settlement in central Uganda, in the District of Kiryandongo.The Champion called for a greater solidarity with the government and the people of Uganda.

He further the urgent need to efficiently address the root causes of displacement while commending Uganda for its Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework approach, which focuses on humanitarian an development need of both refugees and host communities.
In collaboration with both governments and with the support of our partner, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the African union organized a refugee camp visit for the UA Champion;

President Obiang was able to witness first hand the remarkable resilience of the Refugees as well as the heartwarming hospitality of the host community.The republic of Uganda has been a hosting refugee for decades, relying mostly on their own resources and few stakeholders.

The Commissioner for political affairs acknowledged the tremendous work done by some international organizations and the host countries themselves and called on more rallying around the efforts towards finding durable solutions to forced displacements in Africa. As the 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the 1969 OAU convention and the 10th anniversary of the Kampala Convention, H.E. Minata Samate Cessouma, congratulated those that have domesticated the above Conventions, and called on those that have yet to do so, to sign, ratify and domesticate them for a better protection and assistance to or displaced populations. Kyriandongo is the second refugee Camp/settlement visited by the Champion, Preisdent Obiang N Mbasogo, this year.
