      • Tegla Loroupe: A trailblazer for gender equality in sports
        Body

Kenyan long-distance runner and global advocate for women, sports and peace, Tegla Loroupe, recently shared her remarkable journey of triumph over adversity, highlighting the challenges she faced as a woman in the world of sports.

From overcoming community scepticism to defying exclusion from national teams, Ms. Loroupe's story serves as a beacon for aspiring athletes and advocates for a more inclusive and equal future in sports.

"The status of women is not the same as that of men," Loroupe said, recounting the early days of her athletic career when her community held reservations about women participating in sports due to a lack of education on gender equality.

Her tenacity and her late sister's support proved pivotal in breaking down societal barriers, challenging the stereotypes that restrained young girls from pursuing their athletic dreams.

Loroupe's academic excellence became a weapon in her fight for inclusion, as she eloquently said: "I was doing very well in class; so there was no way my father could say 'don't do sports.'"

Her journey took a turn when financial struggles compelled her to compromise her athletic pursuits during high school. However, the spirited athlete found solace in the altered rules of a boarding school, where she continued to nurture her passion for running.

On entering college where she was studying accounts, Loroupe faced a daunting challenge within the sports federation. With no mentor or coach from her community, she relied solely on her determination, resilience, and faith in herself.

"I ran against the odds," she said, reflecting on the struggles faced by a woman breaking into the male-dominated realm of professional athletics.

Loroupe's exceptional talent faced resistance from the sports establishment, as she found herself excluded from national teams due to her origin in a conflict area. The turning point came when the media, as Loroupe put it, "always uncovers untold stories".

With media support and advocacy, she successfully fought for her rightful place in the national representation, receiving backing from influential figures, including Ugandan President H.E. Yoweri Museveni and the late Kenyan president H.E. Daniel Arap Moi.

Addressing the scarcity of women in sports, Loroupe offered a powerful piece of advice: "My advice to women is that they mustn't give room to men to say 'we are women, we are weak.' Instead, we need to bring in our brothers so that they can support us."

Her words resonate as a call for collective empowerment, emphasising the importance of solidarity in achieving gender equality in sports.

Reflecting on her achievements, Loroupe expressed joy and satisfaction, acknowledging the significant strides made in women's sports.

She holds world records for 25 and 30 kilometres and previously held the world marathon record.

Loroupe urged all women participating in this year's African Games to persevere and emphasised the importance of integrity, stating, "Let's run clean and let's not cheat".
