AMISOM Delivers Donated Food To IDP Camps in Mogadishu
Mogadishu, 20 August, 2011-The African Union Mission in Somalia has on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day handed over donated food supplies to local officials for distribution to internally displaced persons in the famine-stricken Somali capital.
$10,000 worth of supplies, including rice, sugar, cooking oil and salt, had been donated by the staff of RA International Services, a construction, logistics and maintenance company working in Mogadishu.
Mr Abdul Diabagate, AMISOM’s Senior Humanitarian Affairs Officer, and Lt Col. Kaamurari Katwekyeire, head of the mission’s Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC), delivered the supplies to Wardhiigley district to be shared out among 8 IDP camps in the area.
Working with a local NGO, the Somali Relief, Rehabilitaton and Development Organisation (SORRDO), AMISOM had previously conducted needs assessments in the camps and the donated food is enough to feed 1,850 of the most needy for one week.
On hand to receive the food was SORRDO’s programme officer, Mr. Mohammed Haji Omar, Wardhiigley District Commissioner, Mrs. Deeg Abdikadir Ahmed, and the Deputy Mayor of Mogadishu, Mr. Mohammed Iman Ikar.
SORRDO, which has been working in Somalia for 15 years, will organise the distribution of the food to the IDPs.
Mr Diabagate said that AMISOM was committed to fulfilling its mandate to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian supplies to the people of Mogadishu. “We are doing all in our power to help our Somali brothers at this difficult time. The need is great and we stand ready to help in any way we can to ensure that food reaches those who need it.”

I wish to also thank the AMISOM Military Component for their work in Mogadishu which has created a relatively safe environment for the delivery of humanitarian supplies to vulnerable communities of Mogadishu,” he added.

HIGHLIGHTS
* A recount of applicants for refugee status in Dadaab has found large numbers attempting double registration. The apparent large backlog in applications for registration has been adjusted from 40,000 to 1,909. The average daily arrival rate for the past week was about 1,100 people per day.
* Deteriorating security situation along Somali border and around Dadaab; a vehicle belonging to an international NGO has been hijacked in Hagadera camp.
* Maize prices are on a downward trend but remain significantly above the five-year average.

HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES
.Partners are scaling up response activities in order to reach the worst-affected population to avert further unnecessary deaths. Food assistance partners have reached 1.39 million people in crisis so far in the first two weeks of September, compared to 1.3 million throughout the month of August.
.An estimated 585,000 urban dwellers in Somalia are projected to be in crisis by December if interventions are not scaled up, a quarter more than the first half of the year.
.According to UNICEF, children constitute 80 per cent of the worst-affected population in the current famine.
