          H.E President William Samoei Ruto (PhD), President of the Republic of Kenya and the African Union Champion on Institutional Reform. H.E. Ruto was appointed during the 37th Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2024 to champion the AU Institutional Reform process taking over from the H.E Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda who led the implementation of the reform process since 2016.

        Head of the African Union Election Observation Mission to observe voting at various polling stations in Harare

        What: The Head of the African Union Election Observation Mission Mr HaileMariam Desalegn will mark the start of the AU election-day observation at Queen Elizabeth High School in Harare. (Other African Union observer missions will be doing the same in all 10 provinces of the country).

        When 30th July at 06:45

        Where: Queen Elizabeth High School Harare, Zimbabwe will be the first stop. The Head of Mission will also visit other polling stations such as Girls High School, Alexandra Park Primary School, and Open Space Hiller Road before 10am.
        Before lunch he will visit Mabvazuva Secondary School, DDF Manyame Training Center, Southlands Cooperative, and Hopley Proposed School.
        The afternoon will see him at Eastridge primary school and Cranborne High School.

        Background: The African Union (AU) is the continent’s pan African body consisting of all 55 African countries. It was established on 26 May 2001 and launched on 9 July 2002, replacing the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). The AU is charged with spearheading Africa’s rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States as well as developing a New Partnership worldwide. Its Headquarters is located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The vision of the African Union is that of "An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena". The African Union conducts its election observation in accordance with the AU Charter on Democracy Elections and Governance; the OAU/AU Declaration on Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa; the AU Guidelines for Election Observation and Monitoring Missions; the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights; and the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation. It will also be guided by Zimbabwe’s constitution & legal framework governing the conduct of elections.

        Journalists are invited to cover the head of the AU Election Observation Mission observing the voting at the different polling station.
