The African Union Commission Chairperson Redeploys a Technical Expert Mission to Observe the 6 October 2019 Legislative and 13 October 2019 Presidential Run-Off Elections in Tunisia

Addis Ababa 03rd October 2019 : The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat has redeployed a Technical Expert Mission in the Republic of Tunisia from 3 to 17 October 2019 to observe the 6 October 2019 Legislative and 13 October 2019 Presidential Run-Off Elections in Tunisia. The Expert Mission also observed the first round of presidential elections which took place on 15 September 2019.

The deployment of the African Union Technical Expert Mission is in line with the AU’s mandate of promoting and deepening democracy and democratic elections on the continent, as enshrined in relevant AU instruments such as the 2007 African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance; the 2002 OAU/AU Declaration on Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa; and the 2002 AU Guidelines for Election Observation and Monitoring Mission. It is also in line with the aspirations of the AU Agenda 2063, particularly Aspiration No.3, which aims to ensure good governance, democracy, and respect for human rights, justice and rule of law on the continent.

The objective of the Technical Expert Mission is to make an independent, objective and impartial assessment of the legislative and presidential run-off elections in the Republic of Tunisia in conformity with the international, continental norms and standards as well as the legal framework of elections in the country.

The African Union Technical Expert Mission is led by Her Excellency Professor Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, former President of the Republic of Mauritius and comprises five election experts drawn from various African countries and the African Union Commission.
