          H.E President William Samoei Ruto (PhD), President of the Republic of Kenya and the African Union Champion on Institutional Reform. H.E. Ruto was appointed during the 37th Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2024 to champion the AU Institutional Reform process taking over from the H.E Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda who led the implementation of the reform process since 2016.

        The 17th IGF, under the overarching theme Resilient Internet for a Shared Sustainable and Common Future, will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 28 November to 2 December 2022.

        Launch of the Internet & Jurisdiction African Union Report

        In 2021, the Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network, with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), embarked on a two-year project with the primary objective to frame, map and address cross-border digital policies for Africa. This project builds on the outcomes of the African Union Commission and Internet & Jurisdiction Policy Network Regional Conference 2020 which addressed transnational and regional legal challenges in cyberspace, emphasizing the value of multistakeholder cooperation to enable digital transformation.

        In what ways can the AU Convention on Cybersecurity and Personal Data Protection and Lomé's Declaration on Cybersecurity and the fight against cybercrime provide the African nation with the appropriate framework for protecting their critical infrastructures and achieving sustainable digital transformation? What are some of the reasons for low ratification? In the post-covid era, what are some of the emerging cyber threats in Africa? Cybersecurity is crucial for ensuring universal, trustworthy, and meaningful access to everyone, as well as for the advancement of an information society. What are some of the trust frameworks used to promote and facilitate cooperation between stakeholders, at the national, regional, and international levels? How is cybercrime, such as phishing, forms of online financial fraud and online confidence schemes, being addressed in Africa? What are the best practices used? What are the consequences globally and the economic ramifications for Africa? → African cybersecurity frameworks → Transnational & transregional cybersecurity cooperation → Mis/dis-information in the global & African contexts

        African Union Open Forum

        The AU Open Forum aims at discussing digital inclusion especially in relation to Capacity Building; Digital Transformation; Data Policy, Cybersecurity and Digital Cooperation. The Forum will also discuss the Internet Governance Capacity Building activities of PRIDA at the national, regional and continental level. Through the host country chair (Malawi) of the Africa IGF 2022, an overview of the Africa School of IG, Africa Youth IGF, African IGF and the Africa IGF Parliamentary session will also be given and comments from the participants received. The 2022 Forum will be linked to the SDGs, especially Goals 5, 8, 9, 10 and 17. Like in the previous editions, the African Union Open Forum is expected to be attended by a broad stakeholders’ representation across government, private sector, academia, technical communities, civil society, ministers, parliamentarians, media, regional and international organizations.  In this session.

        PRIDA (Policy and Regulation Initiative for Digital Africa) project’s contribution to streamlining National, Regional and Continental Internet Governance processes for a common progressive African position - supported by Capacity Building and awareness creation – will be presented in this session. PRIDA programme is a joint initiative of the AU, the EU and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
