With regards to ICT or Information Society in general, the main objective of the Department is to improve intra African connectivity and connect the entire continent to the rest of the world: hence contributing to its integration and economic development.
Taking into account the various Decisions and Declarations on the Information Society, the focus of the Department has been on the facilitation and implementation at continental and regional levels. The key activities in the fields of Telecommunications/ICT, Posts and Broadcasting sectors to achieve the state objectivesinclude:
- Implementation of PIDA ICT Priority Action Plan;
- Implementation of Harmonised ICT policies /ICT and Postal Policies and Regulations in Africa;
- Operationalization of Dot Africa (.Africa) Geographical Top-Level Domain name (GTLD);
- Support the acceleration of the Transition from Analogue to Digital Terrestrial Television (ADM) and Harmonisation of the Digital Dividend part of spectrum;
- Ensuring coordination with RECs, specialized institutions and international agencies for implementing activities related to ICT and Post;
- Development of e-Strategies and e-Services;
- Contribution to outer space activities, notably the space policy, strategy and governance;
- Support to the ratification and transposition of the AU Convention on Cyber Security;
- Implementation of the action plan for the development of Postal Services in Africa; and
- Implementation of concrete projects including: (i) The African Internet Exchange System (AXIS), a project to support the establishment of the Internet exchange Points, Regional Internet Exchange Points and Regional Internet Carrier; and (ii) the Pan African e-Network (PAeN) for Tele-Medicine and Tele-Education.
