2. The Revived Strategy for the Harmonization of Statistics in Africa (SHaSA II) – in collaboration with UNECA, AfDB and ACBF

Since its inception, the African Union (AU) has been working to consolidate the orientations defined by the Abuja Treaty to gradually achieve integration and promote socio- economic development. The building of the African Economic Community (AEC) is one of the major goals of the AU, and has set a number of initiatives in motion, including:

- The harmonization of sectoral development policies;
- The rationalization and consolidation of Regional Economic Communities (RECs); and
- The acceleration of the establishment of financial institutions provided for in the AU Constitutive Act (the African Central Bank, the African Monetary Fund, and the African Investment Bank).

In its efforts to contribute to a more integrated and prosperous continent, the Department of Economic Affairs of the AUC under the Leadership of H.E. Victor Harison, Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Management of Dr. Rene N’Guettia Kouassi, Director for Economic Affairs, have the honour to present two key Economic Publications produced by the African Union Commission.

The launch will be held at the AUC Headquarters in Addis Ababa on Wednesday, July 11th, 2018 and will be attended by High-level invitees from the African Union Commission (Member States and Government Officials, Heads of delegations, Ambassadors), the Media, International and Regional Development Organizations, Civil Society Organizations and Academics.

Under the theme “Africa’s Development Dynamics: Growth, Inequality and Employment”, these publications aim to address the African continent’s integration challenges and aims to propose a sustainable and attainable approach to address such challenges faced by the continent in a globalized context.

- African Development Dynamics- “The African Economic Report of reference for an inclusive and sustainable development of the continent.”

This first edition of the African Union Commission’s African Development Dynamics Report, produced by the AUC Department of Economic Affairs, conceived and developed by African experts and supported by the OECD Development Centre, aims to fuel debate between members of the
Union, citizens, business people and researchers. It plays an imperative role in furthering the project to integrate and transform Africa as set out in Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area. These pan-African initiatives are milestones along the path towards a united, integrated, peaceful and prosperous Africa that can participate fully in international governance. The aim of this new report is to illuminate this path in the context of globalisation. By analysing the economic development of Africa using an African analytic grid, it will contribute to the definition and implementation of innovative policies that are adapted to the specific characteristics of each economy and that further the African Union’s
priorities.

- Revised Strategy for the Harmonization of Statistics in Africa (SHaSA 2)- “SHaSA 2 for an effective African statistical system servicing Agenda 2063 and African Integration.”

The Revised Strategy for the Harmonization of Statistics in Africa, more commonly known as SHaSA 2, is the fruit of the collective efforts of the four pan-African organizations – African Union Commission (AUC), UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF)and the African Development Bank (AfDB). This document sets out the path that will lead to the emergence of a new Africa – one that is prosperous, integrated and peaceful – by 2063. Its main purpose is to enable the African Statistical System (ASS) to generate timely, reliable, and harmonized statistical information, covering all aspects of political, economic, social, and cultural integration for Africa. It aims to drive forward the continental integration agenda, which is a pivotal goal of African Heads of State and Government. The document provides some background information on the African integration process and highlights priority statistical requirements for its three major dimensions, namely: (i) political integration and regional and continental governance, (ii) economic integration, and (iii) social and cultural integration. In addition, it highlights various initiatives that have been undertaken by ASS stakeholders at national, regional, continental, and international levels to foster the development of quality statistical information in Africa.
