Ruto was appointed during the 37th Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2024 to champion the AU Institutional Reform process taking over from the H.E Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda who led the implementation of the reform process since 2016.

        Who: The African Union Commission, the World Bank, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to jointly launch the Africa Climate Mobility Initiative (ACMI).

        Objectives:

        The ACMI aims to:

        • Support the African continent to both harness the potential of mobility in the context of the climate crisis;
        • Advance efforts for addressing climate-forced displacement and migration;
        • Generate political momentum, a common policy agenda, and resources to shape the future of mobility in Africa;
        • Advance data-based, comprehensive solutions to support people-centered adaptation to climate mobility actors; and
        • Protect those on the move; and further the resilience of African communities confronting the climate crisis.

        Participants:

        The high level launch would be held on the margins of the high-level week of the 76th General Assembly of the United Nations and will be attended by representatives of Member States, academia, expert entities, regional, philanthropy and international organisations as well as civil society and the private sector.

        Notes to the Editor:

        The Africa Climate Mobility Initiative is an unprecedented global partnership launched by the AU Commission, UN, and World Bank and joined by the academic, practitioner, policymaking, and philanthropic communities to generate political momentum, common policy agenda, and resources for harnessing the potential and addressing the challenges of climate-forced mobility in the African continent. ACMI will advance data-based comprehensive solutions to support people-centered adaptation to climate mobility; protect those on the move; and further the resilience of African communities confronting the climate crisis with focus on the challenges and opportunities of climate mobility at the regional and local levels.
