Ruto was appointed during the 37th Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2024 to champion the AU Institutional Reform process taking over from the H.E Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda who led the implementation of the reform process since 2016.

        Opening Ceremony: Monday, 11 May 2026

        WHY: Convened in terms of Article 64 (2) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, read together with Rule 28 of the Rules of Procedure of the ACHPR, 2020. The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the ACHPR) wishes to inform State Parties to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Organs of the African Union, National Human Rights Institutions, International Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations, Members of the media and the general public, that the 87th Ordinary Session, of the ACHPR (Private & Public) is scheduled to take place as follows from 24 April – 4 May 2026 (Private-Virtual) and from 11 - 20 May 2026 (Public – Physical)

        PUBLIC SESSION DOCUMENTS: 87th Ordinary Session - Public Session Documents

         

        WHO: The Commissioners and the Secretariat of the ACHPR, all States Parties, Organs of the African Union, National Human Rights Institutions, International Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations, and other members of the general public are invited to attend.

        Only the Public segment of this 87th Ordinary Session will be in person; participants who wish to attend are required to register online by the given deadline. The Commission will focus on the following Session activities, among others: 

        1. Human Rights Situation in Africa
        2. Consideration of State Party Reports.
        3. Discussion on Relationship and Cooperation between the ACHPR and National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)
        4. Consideration of Applications for Observer Status from NGOs.
        5. Activity Reports of Commissioners.
        6. Panel Discussions.
        7. Consideration of Communications.
        8. Consideration of Concluding Observations.
        9. Consideration of Reports and other documents.

        The ACHPR is composed of eleven Commissioners, nationals of Member States of the African Union elected in their individual capacity. The ACHPR meets 4 (four) times a year in Ordinary Sessions, and in Extra-Ordinary Sessions, when necessary.
