- As our continent – and much of the world – continues to grapple with the tremendous threat posed by the unprecedented COVID-19 (Coronavirus) global pandemic, ECOSOCC joins hands in solidarity with Africans across the continent in the fight against the spread of Coronavirus. We believe that the current pandemic represents more than just a passing health crisis. It enjoins us to draw on our African solidarity encapsulated in the spirit of Ubuntu to work together as humanity.
African Union Chair President Cyril Ramaphosa Appoints Special Envoys to Mobilise International Economic Support for Continental Fight Against COVID-19
The Chairperson of the African Union, President of the Republic of South Africa His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Dr Donald Kaberuka, Mr Tidjane Thiam and Mr Trevor Manuel as Special Envoys of the African Union to mobilise international support for Africa’s efforts to address the economic challenges African countries will face as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Special Envoys will be tasked with soliciting rapid and concrete support as pledged by the G20, the European Union and other international financial institutions.

1. The STC-EST 3 convened a virtual bureau meeting on 9th April 2020 to discuss the Education, Science and Technology responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. The meeting was chaired by H.E. Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Uganda and chair of the STC. The following members of the STC Bureau participated in the virtual meeting: Hon. Dr Itah Kandji-Murangi, Minister of Higher Education, Training and Innovation, Namibia, and Dr Muhammad Ammari Zaid, Ag. Minister of Education, Libya.

The global number of COVID-19 cases reported by the World Health Organization reached 1 476 819 cases of COVID-19 on 9th April 2020. Precisely, the COVID-19 is a global catastrophe with detrimental and adverse effects on all socio-economic fundamental pillars.

Statement of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention on the Potential Clinical Trial of a Tuberculosis Vaccine Protective Against COVID-19 in Africa
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) strongly condemns the detestable comments made by Professors Jean-Paul Mira and Camille Locht on French Television in which they proposed using Africans as subjects for testing a tuberculosis vaccine in clinical trials to gauge its effectiveness against COVID-19. These racist and condescending comments must be condemned by all decent human beings. Indeed, COVID-19 is a global humanitarian crisis that requires global actions and global solidarity.
