The African Union Commission Deputy Chairperson Amb. Kwesi Quartey received H.E. Salvador Antonio Valdes Mesa, First Vice-President of the Council of State & Ministers of the Republic of Cuba. Both sides deliberated on actualizing the MoU signed between the AU Commission and Cuba, and ways of deepening the relationship between Cuba and the African Union.

AUC Moves to Enhance Capacities to Support African Mediation Efforts .

The African Union Commission Department of Peace and Security has rolled out the process to operationalize the AU Mediation Support Unit (MSU). Through the Crisis Management and Post-Conflict Reconstruction Development (CMPCRD) Division, the department has initiated the development of an advanced training manual- a generic and themed curricula- for enhancing the capacities of mediation support personnel. The move follows the AU Peace and Security Council’s call on the Commission, to expedite the operationalization of the MSU as a means to provide technical support to the African mediation efforts on different levels, including through the Panel of the Wise.

African Union Celebrates Africa Day and launches memorial wall in honour of African heroes and heroines

On behalf of H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the Deputy Chairperson of African Union Commission in his address said, there is an urgent need for the African continent to come together and forge a common front in order to promote the building of the Africa we want. “We celebrate this memorable day under the AU 2019 theme "Year of Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons: Towards Durable Solutions to Forced Displacement in Africa". He further said the theme in itself sufficiently demonstrates the acuteness of our challenges, and the urgent and imperative need to work together to ensure all African citizens have the inalienable right to live free, dignified and productive lives.

Statement by H.E Kwesi Quartey Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission on the Occasion Of the Inauguration of the Memorial Wall to Mark the Celebration of the 63rd Africa Day Celebration

Today, we are gather here at the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere building to memorialize and commend those who have fallen in the line of active duty in defence of the value of our continent, Africa. This remembrance is aptly taking place in a building dedicated to one of the major fighters for the liberation of the continent from colonialism and restoring the dignity of the people of Africa. So this is a solemn reminder that the freedoms we now enjoy on this continent are not free.
