African Union Commission and UNAIDS discuss implementation of key continental policy frameworks on health

Map implementation of two major initiatives to transform health in Africa

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 03 July 2017-The African Union Commission and UNAIDS met Monday July 2nd 2017 to discuss the implementation of key continental policy frameworks including the recently Catalytic Framework to end AIDS, Eliminate Malaria in Africa by 2030 and the AIDS Watch Africa Strategic.

Addis Ababa, 3rd July 2017- African Union leaders on Monday brought to focus the need to accelerate efforts to defeat malaria on the continent. With the Catalytic Framework to end AIDS, TB and Malaria in Africa by 2030 in place with clear targets and strategies the African Heads of State and Government committed their countries to sustain the gains made in the fight against malaria and monitor insecticide and antimalarial drug resistance.

Addis Ababa, 4th July 2017- Heads of State and Government meeting on Tuesday adopted the Declaration on Accelerating Implementation of International Health Regulations in Africa. The Declaration seeks to address the increasing public health events and recurrent epidemics on the continent and their huge socio-economic impact. Many African countries have not adequately implemented International Health Regulations to prevent, protect against, control and provide a public health response to the international spread of diseases.

Assembly commends ongoing efforts and urges acceleration of efforts to end Child Marriage

Addis Ababa, 3 July 2017- The Africa Union Champion on Ending Child Marriage, His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu of Zambia presented the progress report on the Campaign to end Child Marriage to the 29th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union. The report highlights significant efforts and challenges in Member States in ending the practice while emphasizing a number of legal and policy reforms and community mobilisation and sustained political commitment.
