INVITATION TO REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDIA

WHAT: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to almost all countries and claimed over 70,000 lives worldwide. More than 9000 cases have been reported in 51 African countries, with over 400 deaths. Africa CDC is supporting African Union Member States in responding to the outbreak. This briefing will provide updated information from Member States and the supported being provided by Africa CDC and other partners.

Decision on the second report of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union on the implementation of the African Union Master Roadmap of Practical Steps to silencing the guns in Africa

The Assembly of the Union commends the Peace and Security Council (PSC) for its efforts in implementing decision Assembly/AU/Dec.645(XXIX), through, among others, the launching at its 716th meeting held on 4 September 2017, of the “Africa Amnesty Month” for the surrender and collection of illegally owned weapons/arms, in line with the African and international best practices; while acknowledging that observance of the African Amnesty Month is one of the major steps towards achieving the goal of silencing the guns in Africa.

Africa’s response to the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) outbreak has received a major boost, after the donation of medical equipment, including over 1.5 million laboratory diagnostic test kits and over 100 tons for infection prevention and control commodities, by the Jack Ma Foundation and the Alibaba Foundation.

H.E. Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission,

Your Excellencies, Commissioners of the African Union,

Your Excellencies Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives Missions in Addis Ababa,

Ladies and Gentlemen;

On this occasion, let me express deep humility for having been elected by the 33rd Ordinary Session of the Assembly, as the first Secretary-General of the AfCFTA Secretariat. I shall undertake this historic mission of serving Africa, with resolute determination.
