H.E President William Samoei Ruto (PhD), President of the Republic of Kenya and the African Union Champion on Institutional Reform. H.E. Ruto was appointed during the 37th Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2024 to champion the AU Institutional Reform process taking over from the H.E Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda who led the implementation of the reform process since 2016.

The African Union fully subscribes to the global mantra and aspiration to facilitate safe, orderly and regular migration. The global number of COVID-19 cases reported by the World Health Organization reached 1 476 819 cases of COVID-19 on 9th April 2020. Precisely, the COVID-19 is a global catastrophe with detrimental and adverse effects on all socio-economic fundamental pillars.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) strongly condemns the detestable comments made by Professors Jean-Paul Mira and Camille Locht on French Television in which they proposed using Africans as subjects for testing a tuberculosis vaccine in clinical trials to gauge its effectiveness against COVID-19. These racist and condescending comments must be condemned by all decent human beings. Indeed, COVID-19 is a global humanitarian crisis that requires global actions and global solidarity.

WHAT: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to almost all countries and claimed over 70,000 lives worldwide. More than 9000 cases have been reported in 51 African countries, with over 400 deaths. Africa CDC is supporting African Union Member States in responding to the outbreak. This briefing will provide updated information from Member States and the supported being provided by Africa CDC and other partners.

The Assembly of the Union commends the Peace and Security Council (PSC) for its efforts in implementing decision Assembly/AU/Dec.645(XXIX), through, among others, the launching at its 716th meeting held on 4 September 2017, of the “Africa Amnesty Month” for the surrender and collection of illegally owned weapons/arms, in line with the African and international best practices; while acknowledging that observance of the African Amnesty Month is one of the major steps towards achieving the goal of silencing the guns in Africa.
The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), dedicated its 693rd meeting held on 14 June 2017, to an Open Session on the implementation of the AU Master Roadmap of Practical Steps to Silence the Guns in Africa by the year 2020.
