H.E President William Samoei Ruto (PhD), President of the Republic of Kenya and the African Union Champion on Institutional Reform. H.E. Ruto was appointed during the 37th Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2024 to champion the AU Institutional Reform process taking over from the H.E Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda who led the implementation of the reform process since 2016.

On 21st June, The African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), the U.S. Mission to the African Union, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), announced their collaboration on the “100,000 MSMEs Initiative for the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises. The announcement was made on the margins of the 1st Anniversary of the MSMEs Initiative celebrations.
Despite positive achievements registered recently in decision-making, African women, as the largest proportion of our population; still remain vulnerable, at-risk and impoverished due to the challenges caused by social, economic, cultural and political marginalization, gender-based violence and discrimination against women, terrorism, conflict, and fundamentalism.
On 22 June 2021, The People's Democratic Republic of Algeria deposited the instrument of ratification of the African Medicines Agency (AMA), becoming the 9th African Union Member State to ratify the Treaty.
H.E. Salah Francis Elhamdi Ambassador of Algeria to the Federal Republic of Ethiopia and the A, presented the ratification instrument to the AUC Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, H.E. Amira Elfadil Mohamed at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
#COVID19 round up: June 2021
As of the 1st of July African Union Member States were reporting the following:
Total cases: 5,509,362COVID-19. This accounts for 3% of total cases reported globally.
Total recoveries: 4,822,701. This accounts for 88% of the total cases reported in Africa.
Total deaths: 142,993. This results in a cumulative case fatality rate (CFR), of 2.6%, and accounts for 3.6% of deaths reported globally.
22 countries I.e. 40% of Member States were reporting a CFR higher than the global average of 2.2%
On the 28th of June 2021, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights led the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (also commonly known as the Banjul Charter), which was adopted in Nairobi, Kenya, on 27 June 1981, by the Assembly of Heads of State of the then Organization of African Unity (OAU).
Africa Day is observed annually to commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) which was created on 25 May 1963. It is the precursor of the African Union (AU).
Africa day provides an opportunity to celebrate the socio-economic achievements of the continent and in line with the African Union Theme for the year 2021 “Arts Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want, this year’s Africa Day activities celebrated the diversity of Africa’s culture and heritage and our shared values enshrined in the spirit of pan-Africanism.
The 1001st meeting of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), held on 1 June 2021, on the situation in Mali and decided, accordingly, in line with the relevant AU normative instruments, to immediately suspend the Republic of Mali from participation in all activities of the African Union, its Organs and institutions, until normal constitutional order has been restored in the country.
