Togo, First AU Member State to Submit State Report on African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 27 March 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat congratulates the Republic of Togo for being the first State Party to submit a Report on the implementation of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG).
“I commend the commitment of the Republic of Togo for abiding with its reporting obligations under Article 49 of ACDEG.” H.E. Moussa Faki remarked.
The Chairperson added that, “as we commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the adoption of ACDEG this year, the AU Commission seizes this opportunity to urge all State Parties that are due to submit State Reports on the implementation of the Charter to do so in order to facilitate inter-state sharing of comparable lessons and experiences towards the promotion and consolidation of democratic governance on the continent.”
Thus far, 29 AU Member States have ratified ACDEG with Algeria, Comoros, Liberia, Namibia and Seychelles being the latest. Of the twenty-nine, 23 State Parties are due to submit State Reports on measures taken with a view to give effect to the principles and commitments of the Charter.
In the coming weeks, the African Governance Platform as the evaluation mechanism for the implementation of ACDEG, through the AU Commission, will communicate the timeline and processes for the review of the Report to the Republic of Togo.
Adopted on 30 January 2007, by the AU Assembly of the Heads of State and Government and entered into force on 15 February 2012, this Charter draws inspiration from several AU Declarations, Charters and Instruments including the AU Constitutive Act, which asserts the eminence of democratic governance as key to achieving our continental goals of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa.
The AU Commission continues to call for the universal ratification, domestication and implementation of ACDEG by all Member States. There is no better time to commit to a peaceful, prosperous and united Africa than now.
The AU Commission looks forward to working collectively with Member States to build on modest gains, learn from the challenges and emerge a stronger, more equitable, people-centered, and united continent that upholds its shared values in practice.
