WHAT: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to over 200 countries and territories and claimed more than 316,000 lives worldwide. Nearly 92,000 cases have been reported in 54 African countries, with over 2,900 deaths. Africa CDC is supporting African Union Member States in responding to the outbreak. This briefing will provide updated information from Member States and new actions taken by Africa CDC and other partners in respond to the pandemic.

Statement of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) on the Landmark Arrest of Félicien Kabuga
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 18 May 2020: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission,Moussa Faki Mahamat welcomes the news of the landmark arrest of Félicien Kabuga, considered to be the financier of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda in 1994. Kabuga was arrested in France on 16 May 2020 after 23 years on the run from justice.

African Energy Ministers agree on Common Strategy for COVID-19 Response and Recovery
African Energy Ministers have agreed on a common strategy to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and to position the sector to power the recovery plan after the pandemic. The agreement was reached at an extra ordinary meeting of the Bureau of the Sub-Committee on Energy of the Specialised Specialized Technical Committee meeting on Transport, Transcontinental and Interregional Infrastructure, Energy and Tourism (STC-TTIIET) held on 12th May 2020 by video conference.

African Youth Front on Corona Virus Launched to ensure Youth are the Custodians of their own Development
To ensure young Africans are taking personal responsibility to stay safe and are included in decision-making, the African Union Youth Envoy, Ms Aya Chebbi joined hands with the AU Commissioner of Social Affairs, H.E. Amira Elfadil, and AU Commissioner for Human Resources, Science, and Technology, H.E. Prof. Sarah Mbi Enow Anyang (HRST) to launch the African Youth Front on Coronavirus that aims to create a platform for youth to contribute to the implementation of African Continental Strategic Plan for COVID-19 Pandemic.
