H.E President William Samoei Ruto (PhD), President of the Republic of Kenya and the African Union Champion on Institutional Reform. H.E. Ruto was appointed during the 37th Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2024 to champion the AU Institutional Reform process taking over from the H.E Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda who led the implementation of the reform process since 2016.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 18 May 2020: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission,Moussa Faki Mahamat welcomes the news of the landmark arrest of Félicien Kabuga, considered to be the financier of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda in 1994. Kabuga was arrested in France on 16 May 2020 after 23 years on the run from justice.
The African Union Commission through the Department of Social Affairs (DSA) and the Directorate of the Citizen and Diaspora Organizations (CIDO) launched the African approach of the Regional Consultation on the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) alongside the United Arab Emirates; the chair of the GFMD for 2020.
African Energy Ministers have agreed on a common strategy to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and to position the sector to power the recovery plan after the pandemic. The agreement was reached at an extra ordinary meeting of the Bureau of the Sub-Committee on Energy of the Specialised Specialized Technical Committee meeting on Transport, Transcontinental and Interregional Infrastructure, Energy and Tourism (STC-TTIIET) held on 12th May 2020 by video conference.
WHAT: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to almost 200 countries and claimed more than 280,000 lives worldwide. Nearly 68,000 cases have been reported in 53 African countries, with over 2,000 deaths. Africa CDC is supporting African Union Member States in responding to the outbreak. This briefing will provide updated information from Member States and new actions taken by Africa CDC and other partners in respond to the pandemic.

To ensure young Africans are taking personal responsibility to stay safe and are included in decision-making, the African Union Youth Envoy, Ms Aya Chebbi joined hands with the AU Commissioner of Social Affairs, H.E. Amira Elfadil, and AU Commissioner for Human Resources, Science, and Technology, H.E. Prof. Sarah Mbi Enow Anyang (HRST) to launch the African Youth Front on Coronavirus that aims to create a platform for youth to contribute to the implementation of African Continental Strategic Plan for COVID-19 Pandemic.
The African Union has inaugurated the African Union COVID-19 Diagnostic Laboratory at its Pan African Veterinary Vaccine Centre, AU-PANVAC, office in Debre-Zeit, Ethiopia.
The laboratory was inaugurated by the AU Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture H.E. Josefa Sacko and the Commissioner for Social Affairs H.E. Amira Elfadil.
Today, the African Union Commission joins the world to commemorate International Nurses Day in support of the invaluable contribution of nurses to the prosperity of health care delivery systems across the globe. At the onset, the Commission pays respect and tribute to all the nursing staff who have lost their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their care, value and dedication will be honoured through generations.

AUC Human Resources, Science and Technology, H.E Prof. Sarah Anyang Agbor said at Extra-Ordinary Session of the Specialized Technical Committee on Education, Science and Technology held virtually on 30th April 2020. The virtual meeting was attended by AU Member States Ministers of Education.
