The Chairperson of the African Union Commission met with H.E. Mamadou Tangara, High Representative for Mali and the Sahel, to exchange views on recent developments in the region. The Chairperson commended the efforts undertaken by the High Representative and encouraged him to continue his engagement and dialogue initiatives in support of stability, peace and sustainable development across the Sahel.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission met with H.E. Abdoulaye Diop, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Mali. Their discussions focused on recent developments in Mali and the wider Sahel region. The Chairperson reaffirmed the African Union’s full solidarity with Mali following the events of 25 April 2026. Both sides agreed to maintain dialogue in support of Mali’s efforts towards stability, good governance and development, in line with the aspirations of Agenda 2063.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has appointed H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to support AU Commission’s efforts towards peace and stability in the Horn of Africa,

Announcing the appointment, the AUC Chairperson stated: “President Obasanjo brings unparalleled experience, wisdom, and credibility to this important assignment”.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, M. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, M. António Guterres, and the President of the French Republic, M. Emmanuel Macron held informal consultations on 13 May 2026 at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Discussions focused on several African and international issues of mutual interest, on which the three leaders noted a strong convergence of views.
