The theme of the International Women's Day for the year 2021,: "Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 World" reflects the determination of the international community to support Gender equality and the Empowerment of women, through their participation and representation at the level of all decision-making bodies.

6 March 2021, Addis Ababa: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has learnt with great sadness of the passing of the former Special Representative of the Chairperson in Somalia from 2007-2009, Ambassador Nicolas Bwakira of Burundi.

During his long and exemplary career, Ambassador Bwakira took on senior roles and responsibilities at various institutions, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the University of South Africa (UNISA), the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI).

5 mars 2021, Addis Ababa: Le Président de la Commission de l’Union africaine, Moussa Faki Mahamat, a suivi avec consternation la perte de vies humaines civiles et parmi les forces de l’ordre, lors de la tentative d’arrestation de Monsieur Yaya Dillo, suite à des poursuites judiciaires dont il fait l’objet. Il s’incline devant les mémoires de ceux qui ont perdu leurs vies et présente ses sincères condoléances aux familles des victimes.

The 38th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union held on 3 and 4 February 2021 unanimously endorsed the candidature of Dr. Arkebe Oqubay of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, as the sole African candidate for the post of Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
