Addis Ababa, 11 January 2022: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, strongly condemns the killing of scores of innocent people and injuries of several others in recent attacks by armed bandits in Anka and Bukkuyum Local Government Areas of Zamfara State, Nigeria. He commiserates with the families of the deceased and the Government of Nigeria, and prays for the speedy recovery of the wounded.

Addis Ababa, 8 January 2022: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, was pleased to learn of the release of political opposition figures detained in Ethiopia. 

The Chairperson welcomes this important gesture of appeasement of the political situation in Ethiopia. He sincerely hopes that it will be the trigger for a political process, paving the way for the implementation of a genuinely inclusive National Dialogue process for the peaceful and consensual solution to the political and institutional problems facing the Federation.

The Information and Communication Directorate (ICD) of the African Union Commission (AUC) hereby announces that the online registration for journalists interested to cover the 40th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 35th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU scheduled to take place from 02-06 February 2022, has been launched on the AU website. These two sessions will be preceded by that of the Permanent Representatives Committee.

Addis Ababa, 3 January 2022: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, is deeply concerned by the latest developments in the political situation in Sudan, particularly the resignation of Prime Minister Dr Abdalla Hamdok, and the ongoing protests and violence in the country.

The Chairperson called on all national civilian and military actors to intensify their efforts to find a path towards consensual approaches and a peaceful resolution to the crisis, in conformity with the transitional political agreements.

AU Member States, Regional Economic Communities and Civil Society Organisations Trained on the AU Gender Observatory

Representatives from AU Member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and Civil Society leaders of Africa gathered virtually from 14 – 15 December 2021 for training on the effective use of the African Union Gender Observatory (AUGO) Platform. The new AU Gender Observatory is an online reporting and knowledge management platform to monitor and report on Member States’ efforts towards implementation of gender equality commitments including on Violence Against women and Girls (VAWG), Harmful Practices (HP) and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Reproductive Rights (SRH & RR).

Official Launch of the African Union Centre for Post-conflict Reconstruction and Development

The African Union Centre for Post-conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD) was officially launched on Tuesday 21 December 2021 in Cairo, Egypt. The launch was officiated by H.E. Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security and H.E Ambassador Soha Gendi, Assistant Foreign Minister of Egypt for African Organizations and Communities. The launch was witnessed by the African Diplomatic Corps based in Cairo and relevant line Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Egyptian Government.

In Dhobley, AMISOM builds classrooms to ease congestion at primary and secondary school

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has constructed five new classrooms at Omar Binu Khadab Primary and Secondary School in Dhobley town, Jubaland State, as part of its support to the education sector in Somalia.

The construction of the classrooms was done under the mission’s Quick Impact Projects, which are projects primarily structured to help address the basic needs, including health and education, of local populations in Somalia, especially of those living under AMISOM’s areas of responsibility.
