H.E President William Samoei Ruto (PhD), President of the Republic of Kenya and the African Union Champion on Institutional Reform. H.E. Ruto was appointed during the 37th Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2024 to champion the AU Institutional Reform process taking over from the H.E Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda who led the implementation of the reform process since 2016.

Lusaka, Zambia, June 18, 2019: Member States of the African Union and the regional economic communities (RECs) meeting to validate the Draft Implementation Plan of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) in Africa started on June 18th June in Lusaka, Zambia.
Addis Ababa, 17th June, 2019: The Thirty Eight (38th) Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC) is holding at the African Union in preparation for the 12th Extra Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union on the African Continental Free Trade Area and the first mid-year coordination meeting of the AU and the regional economic communities (RECs) to be held in Niamey, Niger in July.

The Department of Political Affairs (DPA) of the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) have jointly organized a workshop for the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) and senior Somalia stakeholders on electoral security and electoral dispute resolution from 17-20 June 2019 in Kampala, Uganda.

Kenyan Vice President H.E William Ruto has said eliminating 90 percent of import tariffs within Africa is predicted to yield a 52 percent growth in trade. Speaking when he officially opened the 15th Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Partnership Platform (PP) themed, “Enhancing Trade and Market Access for Accelerated Agriculture Transformation,” H.E Ruto said the move to do so should be informed by a conviction that giving up revenues from tariffs for earnings from trade was an optimal trade off.
Addis Ababa, 14 June 2019: Amb. Kwesi Quartey, Deputy Chair of the African Union Commission (AUC), held a meeting with the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Mr. Tibor Nagy, and the US Special Envoy to the Sudan, Amb. Donald Booth. The two were accompanied by the US Ambassador to Ethiopia, Mary Beth Leonard.
The two sides exchanged views on the events unfolding in Sudan and deliberated on how the US could complement the efforts of the AU to facilitate the process of restoring calm to the country.

Update On African Union Actions in Response to Recent Ebola Outbreaks
Following the recent outbreak of Ebola cases reported in Uganda, The African Union (AU) is collaborating with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uganda to mobilise support to ensure adequate response and implementation of prevention and control measures, including deployment of senior experts from the AU’s Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
