Commissioner Tumusiime discusses agricultural transformation in Africa with Dr. Shrier of the Office of Global Food Security
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 16 May 2014- African Union Commission’s Rural Economy and Agriculture, Commissioner, H.E Tumusiime Rhoda Peace, today received Dr.Jonathan Shrier, the Acting Special Representative for the Office of Global Food Security who called on her at her office at the African Union Commission.
Dr. Shrier is in Addis Ababa to attend the International Conference on Building Resilience for Food and Nutrition Security, organized by the international Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). He was accompanied by Philip Drouin, Deputy Head of Mission for the US Embassy to the AU and Quintin Gray, Agriculture Counselor and Liaison of the U.S Department of Agriculture to the AU.
They discussed many areas of collaboration and support by the United States Government and especially through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Commissioner Tumusiime registered the appreciation of the AUC for the support of the US in the drive towards agricultural transformation and the vision of a food and nutrition secure Africa.
They specifically discussed issues pertaining to the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition, the Leadership Council that governs it and the Grow Africa arm that engages the participation of the private sector in African agricultural transformation. They also discussed the possibility of agriculture featuring prominently at the forthcoming Summit of US-Africa Heads of State and Government.
They further discussed issues relating to climate smart agriculture and preparations for the UN Summit in Climate Change due in new York on 23 September, where an Alliance on Climate Smart Agriculture is expected to be adopted to promote agricultural productivity, resilience of rural communities and to lower the carbon footprint of agriculture, among others.
They agreed to continue collaborating to take advantage of the momentum generated by the AU Year of Agriculture and Food Security also marking the 10th Anniversary of CAADP.
