The positive developments in Africa dominate talks between AU Commission and Germany.

30th January 2019, African Union Headquarters -The African Union (AU) Commission and the Federal Republic of Germany have lauded their existing mutually beneficial cooperation and committed to advance collaboration and synergy towards stability and sustainable economic development in Africa.
The Acting Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Amb. Kwesi Quartey held talks with H.E. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, with participation of AU Commissioners and members of the German Government and Parliament.
The roundtable meeting took stock of existing collaboration and discussed prospects of enhancing key priority areas of work including trade, investment mobilization particularly in infrastructure and energy, peace and security, capacity building for economic and skills development, migration and the promotion of a rules-based multilateral international system.
The AU Commission briefed on the status of operationalizing the African Continental Free Trade Area, and apprised the German delegation on the developments in the domestication of the African Union Migration Policy. Following the establishment of the joint EU-AU-UN Task Force on migration in 2017, the AU-led taskforce has made commendable progress in addressing the situation of migrants held in Libya, through repatriation and integration in their countries of origin.
The AU Commission expressed appreciation for the role Germany plays in support of peace and security priorities on the Continent and looked forward to continued cooperation and consultation in this field. Both sides emphasized the importance of supporting African-led efforts to address peace and security challenges on the Continent.

After the roundtable meeting, the President of Germany and his delegation proceeded to visit the Peace and Security Building on the premises of the African Union Commission, where the President participated in a moderated discussion about crisis prevention in the context of a “PeaceLab” workshop. The Julius Nyerere Peace and Security Building was financed by the German government and remains a symbol of German-AU cooperation.
