Addis Ababa, 27 January 2016: H.E. Dr. Aisha Laraba Abdullahi, Commissioner for Political Affairs of the African Union Commission met with H.E. Mr. Kristian Jensen, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. The Minister was accompanied by a high-level delegation.
The Commissioner for Political Affairs welcomed H.E. Mr. Jensen and thanked him and his delegation for visiting the Department of Political Affairs (DPA) of the African Union Commission (AUC). She also thanked the Delegation for the financial support provided by Denmark for the election observation mission of the Africa Union. Dr. Abdullahi briefed the Ambassador on the work and the mandate of the DPA and its efforts to promote democracy, good governance and human rights on the continent. She also briefed the visiting Delegation on Project 2016 as well as the upcoming elections in Africa.
The Minister inquired about the state of affairs of the African Governance Architecture (AGA) and its relationship with the African Peace and security Architecture (APSA).
Dr. Abdullahi stated that establishing the African Governance Architecture (AGA) is not about creating new institutions. It is about strengthening coordination amongst AU organs and institutions with a formal mandate in governance, democracy and human rights, as a measure to enhance their capacity and optimise impact. She further added that the AGA is the overall political and institutional framework for the promotion of democracy, governance and human rights in Africa. The AGA provides the framework to promote structural conflict prevention in Africa.
H.E. Dr. Abdullahi also responded to questions about the situation in Burundi, Central African Republic, South Sudan and Somalia. She also responded to questions regarding the deployment of African forces to Burundi as well as the impact of the human rights observers currently in Burundi.
The Minister ended his visit by extending an invitation to the Commissioner for Political Affairs to attend a Global Women Meeting on the participation of women in politics, which is to take in Denmark in May 2016.
