      MEDIA ADVISORY

WORKSHOP ON THE LAUNCH OF CESA CURRRICULUM CLUSTER.

INVITATION TO REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDIA

WHAT: The HRST Department Under African Union Commission will convene a meeting to Lunch the Continental Education Strategy for Africa, (CESA) curriculum Cluster and a meeting for all Cluster Coordinators at the Headquarters of the African Union Commission in Ethiopia, Addis Ababa.

      WHEN: 10th -12th December, 2018

WHERE: African Union Commission Headquarters, Small Conference Hall 4

WHO: The HRST Department under African Union Commission.

WHY: Basing on the strategic objectives of CESA 16-25 it is essential that a thematic Cluster on Curriculum be established, which may exclusively address curriculum issues and make a clear link with other clusters using a multi sectorial approach. The Curriculum cluster will provide opportunity for each education stakeholder to make his or her best contribution to education and training in Africa. The Cluster work plan will identify specific interventions to support the achievements of all relevant Strategic Objectives of the CESA 16-25.

OBJECTIVES: The workshop will focus on the following specific objectives:

Assist member countries to minimize inconsistences in curriculum and strengthen their National Curriculum Centers through international best practices
Establish a network of communications among curriculum development centers with ACO serving as a clearing house for the exchange of information on selected aspects of curriculum development in Africa through conferences, workshops, webinars, etc.

Organize and/or facilitate joint training programmes, workshops, seminars and regular meetings on curriculum materials development and evaluation among Curriculum Development Centers
Promote production and exchange of curriculum materials among Curriculum Development Centres across the continent
Encourage and promote joint curriculum research programmes as well as the exchange of research information
Set up task forces to carry out specific projects in curriculum development and research
Provide opportunities for the exchange programmes between curriculum specialists and personnel between centres
Establish a working relationship with other clusters at African Union

      Participants:

The launch of the Curriculum cluster will bring together AU Member States, Member States Agencies, Regional Economic Communities, continental organizations, partnerships and coalitions, global organizations and agencies, relevant Education, Training and Research Institutions as well as public, private and civil society institutions and individuals interested in supporting the achievement of CESA goals related to Curriculum Development

      Background:

Following the participants’ deliberations at the first international conference on curriculum for sustainable learning that was held from 28th to 31st May 2018 at Entebbe Imperial Golf View Hotel in Uganda, it emerged that there is need to address issues of curriculum by African Union. Participants acknowledged that curriculum needs particular attention since it is the building block for any strong education system. They noted that the relevance of curriculum programs to the education development agenda cannot be underscored given that the challenge today is for education to demonstrate that it is moving from a “transmission” model of teaching to a “transformative” model to ensure quality education delivery and impact.
In pursuit of the above, a new cluster on Curriculum Development for all levels of education ought to be created in order to address the issues confronting education quality, relevance and responsiveness, as a necessary part of implementing the Continental Education Strategy for Africa, (CESA) and Agenda 2063.

Journalists are invited to cover the event.
