AUC-IEA FIRST MINISTERIAL FORUM ON POWERING AFRICA’S ENERGY FUTURE

Who: The African Union Commission (AUC) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) will co-organize a ministerial summit on 12 June 2019 at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia..

Why: In May 2018 through the signing of an MoU, the AUC and IEA agreed to work together to realize shared goals of supporting enhanced energy security, energy statistics, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainable economic development in Africa. As part of this coordinated effort, AUC Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, H.E. Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid, and IEA Executive Director, Dr. Fatih Birol, agreed to co-host a summit in Africa in 2019 to address electricity and clean-cooking access, power market interconnectivity, infrastructure development and energy sector investment in Africa.
Objectives of the AUC-IEA First Ministerial Forum:
The AUC-IEA Ministerial Forum offers a unique opportunity to assemble senior political figures, policymakers and CEOs to engage in a policy dialogue identifying opportunities and best practices for developing and investing in Africa’s energy markets. The first annual summit on June 12, 2019 will provide critical inputs into the IEA’s 2019 Special Report on Africa for the World Energy Outlook as well as contribute to tracking and analysing progress towards achieving SDG 7. The Forum also will contribute to ongoing efforts to realise targets set out in the African Union’s Agenda 2063 for a Prosperous Africa Based on Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development starting with its 10-year implementation plan. The AUC and IEA intend to position the event as the annual event on energy access in Africa.
PARTICIPATION :
The Organizing Institutions have received more than 150 confirmations from senior political figures, policymakers and CEOs across government and industry focused on the development of Africa’s energy sector.
Journalists are invited to cover the event and a Press conference after the opening session.
