Background Information
The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to about 220 countries and territories with more than 136.1 million cases; and claimed the lives of over 2.9 million people globally. In Africa, over 4.3 million cases have been reported in all countries, with about 116,000 deaths.
Africa CDC continue to work with Member States to ensure an effective response to the outbreak by Member States, including maintaining key public health measures which have helped to minimize the rate of infections and deaths in Africa compare to other regions.
This week’s briefing will highlight Africa CDC support to member states in response to the pandemic and provide regular updates on the general COVID-19 situation across the continent. Dr Nkengasong will also focus on the progress of vaccination rollout in AU member states and latest developments about COVID-19 vaccines.
