The Pan African University (PAU) and Hiroshima University (HU) have signed a collaborative agreement that establishes a comprehensive framework for academic cooperation between the two institutions. The agreement, signed by Prof. Jean Koulidiati, Rector of PAU on behalf of H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and Dr. Mitsuo Ochi, President of Hiroshima University, marks a significant milestone in Japan-Africa educational partnerships.
The collaboration focuses particularly on joint supervision of master's and doctoral students, creating new opportunities for African scholars to conduct research at Hiroshima University. Under this agreement, Hiroshima University will accept up to five students annually from each of PAU's five specialized institutes across Africa, covering disciplines ranging from basic sciences to space research.
A key feature of the agreement is the establishment of a co-supervision program where students will conduct research under joint guidance from both institutions. Students participating in this program will have the opportunity to spend up to one year at Hiroshima University's campus, fostering international research collaboration and cultural exchange.
The agreement includes substantial support mechanisms for participating students. PAU will provide monthly scholarships of USD 500 for master's students and USD 800 for doctoral students during their stay in Japan. Additionally, Hiroshima University will waive tuition fees for these students, demonstrating both institutions' commitment to making this opportunity accessible to talented African researchers.
To ensure high-quality research outcomes, the agreement mandates that participating students publish their work in international journals. This requirement aligns with both institutions' commitment to contributing to global scientific knowledge and maintaining high academic standards.
The collaboration encompasses broader academic exchanges, including information sharing on course development, teaching methods, and joint research projects. This comprehensive approach aims to strengthen both institutions' capacities while promoting international understanding and academic excellence.
This agreement, valid for three years with the possibility of extension, represents a significant step forward in promoting academic excellence and fostering international cooperation between Japan and Africa.
