The African Union Peace Fund has marked a pivotal milestone in its mission to finance sustainable peace initiatives across Africa with the African Union Peace Fund Board of Trustees’ decision to endorse the adoption of the Due Diligence and Compliance Policy. Through this policy, thorough screening processes, detailed risk assessments, and ongoing monitoring systems will ensure that contributions from multilateral financial institutions, corporate entities, philanthropists and other sources are managed with the highest standards of integrity.
"The Peace Fund Board of Trustees endorsement of the adoption of this policy is a transformative step in reinforcing the integrity and credibility of the AU Peace Fund. It reflects the African Union’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of accountability and transparency as we mobilize resources to address Africa's peace and security challenges," stated H.E. Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
As an African-led instrument dedicated to conflict prevention, mediation, and capacity building under the African Union’s Agenda 2063, the Peace Fund relies on its credibility to foster trust among partners and stakeholders worldwide. The new policy will introduce a robust risk assessment system that evaluates incoming funds to mitigate risks such as money laundering, corruption, and terrorism financing.
It will additionally enhance transparency and accountability through comprehensive audit trails, public disclosures of contributions, and strict monitoring of fund utilization. These measures will ensure that every dollar received and disbursed by the Peace Fund complies with international regulations, including the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
The implementation of the Due Diligence and Compliance Policy will be overseen by the Board of Trustees and the Executive Management Committee, supported by a dedicated compliance officer at the African Union Peace Fund Secretariat, who will ensure adherence to these high standards. This effort will ensure that the Peace Fund remains aligned with evolving global best practices and maintains its commitment to ethical financial management.
Mrs. Dagmawit Moges, Director of the African Union Peace Fund, underscored the importance of this policy, stating, “These stringent compliance measures will guarantee that Member States and stakeholders can have full confidence in the transparent and ethical management of their contributions. With this advancement, we are better positioned to align with international standards and to fulfil our mandate with greater efficiency and accountability.”
In addition to adopting the Due Diligence and Compliance Policy document, the Board of Trustees took significant steps to strengthen its leadership and oversight capabilities. H.E. Mr. Anicet-Georges Dologuélé, former Prime Minister of the Central African Republic, was nominated as the new Chairperson of the Board. Furthermore, Mr. Kalidou Gadio, a seasoned legal counsel who served at the African Development Bank and other institutions, was appointed as a member of the Audit Committee. These appointments further bolster the Fund’s capacity to effectively address Africa’s pressing peace and security challenges.
