Excellencies, it is my honor to address you today and brief on the challenges faced by young people in Africa since the outbreak of COVID-19 as well as present the recommendations they came out as a result of two months consultations series that my office (AU Office of the Youth Envoy) convened besides a recent continental wide consultation held last week with partners.

Addis Abeba, le 16 juin 2020: Le président de la Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat exprime son indignation et sa préoccupation suite aux multiples attaques terroristes dont ont été victimes ces dernières semaines le Nigeria, le Burkina Faso, la Côte d’Ivoire et le Mali.

Tout en condamnant fermement ces attaques lâches et en présentant ses condoléances aux familles des victimes, le président de la Commission réitère la nécessité de renforcer la lutter contre le terrorisme et appelle à la solidarité de tous dans ces moments particulièrement difficiles.

I have the honour to make this statement on behalf of H.E. the Chairperson on the Day of the African Child. The Day of the African Child was first conceptualized by the Heads of State and Governments of then OAU in commemoration of the 16th June 1976 student uprising in Soweto, South Africa.

The February 2020 African Union Summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, afforded African women and girls various platforms and opportunities to rally support and advance actions towards the implementation of commitments on gender equality and women’s empowerment (GEWE). Their efforts translated into the declaration of years 2020 to 2030 as the new Decade of Women’s Financial and Economic Inclusion. In this declaration, African leaders recommitted to scale up actions for the progressive gender inclusion towards sustainable development at the national, regional and continental levels.
