Addis Ababa 30th January 2016 - African Union Commission recognises two distinguished African Scientist - Prof. OPARA Umezurike (male) of Nigeria and prof. NYOKONG, Tebello (female) of South Africa under the 2015 edition of the prestigious Kwame Nkrumah Continental Scientific Awards.

The award ceremony took place on Saturday 30th January 2016, during the 26th Session of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government, at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

PRESIDENT IDRISS DEBY ITNO OF CHAD HAS BEEN ELECTED NEW CHAIRPERSON OF THE AFRICAN UNION

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 30 January 2016: The new Chairperson of the African Union (AU), H.E. Mr. Idriss Deby Itno, President of the Republic of Chad, was elected today, Saturday 30 January 2016, by the Heads of State and Government of the African Union, during their 26th Ordinary Session holding in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

President Idriss Debby is taking over from H.E Mr. Robert Gabriel Mugabe, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, as the new Chairperson of the Union for the year 2016.

1. Your Excellencies, I wish to express to you my appreciation for your kind invitation for me to join you here today at the NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee Meeting. I particularly want to thank the Chairperson of NEPAD, H.E. President Macky Sall and all Heads of State and Governments for your outstanding leadership, vision, passion and commitment to the ideals of NEPAD – and my brother Dr. Mayaki – the CEO of NEPAD, for his relentless work on behalf of Africa.
