Launch of Activities to Support National Determinant Contributions (NDCs) Centre in Morocco

The African Energy Commission (AFREC) in collaboration with the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO), on 29 October 2021, hosted virtual kick-off meetings to launch the activities of the NDC Support Centre in Morocco aimed at improving reporting of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). The NDC Support Center project is an initiative of AFREC and VITO which was launched in Malawi and Uganda in May and June 2021.  Morocco is the third country to benefit from this pilot initiative, and more African countries are expected to benefit in the future.

12th Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security (ADFNS) Commemorated

Commemoration of the “12th Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security” (ADFNS) was marked by a virtual colloquium from 28 to 29 October under the auspices of the African Union Commission (AUC).

The Assembly of the African Union Heads of State and Government, sitting in their 15th Ordinary Session in Kampala, Uganda in 2010, declared every 30th October as a day to highlight the essence and need for Member States to focus on improving the persistent challenges of food and nutrition insecurity that confront the continent.

The Republic of Uganda signs Treaty for the Establishment of the African Medicine Agency (AMA)

On 1 November 2021, the Republic of Uganda became the twenty sixth (26th) African Union (AU) member state to sign the Treaty for the establishment of the African Medicines Agency (AMA) at the AU Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Mme. Cisse Mariama Mohamed the Director for Social Development, Culture and Sports directorate received the delegation from Uganda on behalf of H.E. Mrs. Amira Elfadil, Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development.

The Chairperson recalls his statement of 9 November 2020, and once again urges all parties to safeguard the territorial integrity, unity and national sovereignty of the the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. He further urges the parties to engage in dialogue to seek a peaceful solution in the interests of the country.

AMISOM and Government of Italy begin construction of a 68-bed hospital facility for Somali National Army

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) with sponsorship from the Government of Italy, has commenced construction of a 68-bed health facility for soldiers and officers of the Somali National Army (SNA).

The construction of the SNA hospital is being implemented under the Early Recovery and Stabilisation programme. Under the programme, AMISOM undertakes Quick Impact Projects to extend services through the construction of schools, health facilities, police stations, safe water projects, and provide tools of work to the Somali security forces.

Today, November 1st 2021, I join Africans on the continent and in the diaspora to celebrate celebration of Africa Youth Day. This date is commemorated every year and was proclaimed on the adoption of the African Youth Charter in Banjul, Gambia in 2006 and it recognizes youth as key agents for Africa’s socio-economic growth and sustainable development.
