Five years after the adoption of the Africa Agenda 2063 and its vision for greater African economic and political integration, and taking into consideration that next year marks three decades since the adoption of the Abuja Treaty establishing the African Economic Community, Heads of State and Government from the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and the Regional Mechanisms (RMs) together with the African Union Commission, held a virtual meeting on 22nd October 2020 to take stock of the progress made in the area of integration and different aspect of development in the continent.

Thank you for availing yourselves for this second mid-year coordination meeting of the African Union, the Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms.

We thought it would be important to hold this meeting even under the conditions that have been imposed on us by the coronavirus pandemic, because it is vital that the processes of the African Union and the work of African integration continue.

21 October 2020, Addis Ababa: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat strongly condemns the violence that erupted on 20 October 2020 during protests in Lagos, Nigeria that has resulted in multiple deaths and injuries.

The Chairperson offers his sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.

H.E. Dr Amani Abou-Zeid celebrating 75th anniversary of the Fifth Pan-African Congress

Invited by the universities of Manchester and Salford, H.E. Dr Amani Abou-Zeid, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy delivered the keynote address to the symposium celebrating 75th anniversary of the fifth Pan-African Congress that took place in Manchester in October 1945 — a milestone event which brought together then intellectuals and activists such as W.E.B Du Bois, Kwame Nkrumah, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Jomo Kenyatta. The Congress was a springboard for these future leaders in connecting with each other and developing new national strategies towards self-rule and decolonization.

The African Union Commission (AUC) through its Department of Trade and Industry organized the 3rd African Union (AU) Symposium on Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and Green Industrialization from 28th to 29th September 2020. The objective of the symposium was to provide a platform for SEZ, and green industrialization policy makers, practitioners, financial institutions, investors and academia, AU Member States and other countries with a focus on identifying good practices for SEZ planning, development and operationalization.
