The Bureau of the African Union Heads of State has appointed a Board of Trustees (the “Board”) to advise the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on the management of the Fund, and the Director of Africa CDC will be the secretary.

The mandate of the Board is to advise the Chairperson of the African Union Commission in his capacity as the Accounting Officer of the Union.

How the Funds will be used
1. Mitigate the social, economic and humanitarian impact of COVID-19 in all African countries. The COVID-19 pandemic threatens to reverse the socio-economic advancements made by Africa in the last 30 years as the pandemic proves to be more severe on the socio-economic well-being of populations in Africa. Therefore, money raised through the Fund will be used to implement measures to mitigate the socio-economic and humanitarian impact of COVID-19 in Africa.
Fundraising Target
The objectives of the Fund are to:
- Support the procurement and distribution of essential COVID-19 medical equipment and supplies and mobilize rapid response by Member States.
- Mitigate the social, economic and humanitarian impact of COVID-19 in all African countries.
- Further boost the capacity of Africa CDC to support response to public health emergencies across the continent.
How much is required?
Africa CDC estimates that implementation of the strategy requires US$647 million over the next six months.

Introduction
The African Union COVID-19 Response Fund was established by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Mr Moussa Faki Mahamat on 26 March 2020, with the aim of strengthening the continental response to COVID-19 and mitigate its socio economic and humanitarian impact on African populations.
