May 12th, 2020; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: The African Union Commission (AUC) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) co-convened the 1st meeting of the Taskforce on COVID-19 impact on Food Security and Nutrition in Africa.
The taskforce was launched to implement the recommendations adopted by African Ministers of Agriculture on food security and nutrition outlining priorities of the sector as part of the continental response to COVID-19.

African Energy Ministers agree on Common Strategy for COVID-19 Response and Recovery

African Energy Ministers have agreed on a common strategy to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and to position the sector to power the recovery plan after the pandemic. The agreement was reached at an extra ordinary meeting of the Bureau of the Sub-Committee on Energy of the Specialised Specialized Technical Committee meeting on Transport, Transcontinental and Interregional Infrastructure, Energy and Tourism (STC-TTIIET) held on 12th May 2020 by video conference.

WHAT: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to almost 200 countries and claimed more than 280,000 lives worldwide. Nearly 68,000 cases have been reported in 53 African countries, with over 2,000 deaths. Africa CDC is supporting African Union Member States in responding to the outbreak. This briefing will provide updated information from Member States and new actions taken by Africa CDC and other partners in respond to the pandemic.

To ensure young Africans are taking personal responsibility to stay safe and are included in decision-making, the African Union Youth Envoy, Ms Aya Chebbi joined hands with the AU Commissioner of Social Affairs, H.E. Amira Elfadil, and AU Commissioner for Human Resources, Science, and Technology, H.E. Prof. Sarah Mbi Enow Anyang (HRST) to launch the African Youth Front on Coronavirus that aims to create a platform for youth to contribute to the implementation of African Continental Strategic Plan for COVID-19 Pandemic.

This is proof that the circumstances governing the convening of these meetings, imposed by the COVID 19 pandemic, are extremely serious. At the same time, they impose on us a new working method, in particular by videoconference, to which I extend a warm welcome to you.

The African Union has inaugurated the African Union COVID-19 Diagnostic Laboratory at its Pan African Veterinary Vaccine Centre, AU-PANVAC, office in Debre-Zeit, Ethiopia.

The laboratory was inaugurated by the AU Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture H.E. Josefa Sacko and the Commissioner for Social Affairs H.E. Amira Elfadil.
