Addis Ababa, 1 June 2020 – The African Union takes note of the official announcement by the General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) to approve the one-year postponement of the Expo 2020 Dubai due to COVID-19 and maintain the name “Expo 2020 Dubai”, which the decision on a change of dates was made after reaching the required two-thirds majority vote of BIE member states, as stipulated by article 28 of the 1928 Paris Convention.

The COVID-19 pandemic has evolved into an unprecedented crisis that is heavily affecting the livelihoods, the socio-economic stability and the security of many families and communities in Africa. . The uncertainty, preventive and containment measures against the pandemic, have introduced profound disruptions that have had severe effects and posed unique challenges, particularly, to women and girls on the continent.

The Department of Political Affairs (DPA) of the African Union Commission (AUC) will convene a virtual meeting on COVID-19 Pandemic and Transitional Justice in Africa on 3rd June 2020 from 11h00 to 13h00 East African Time. The meeting will be hosted by H.E. Amb. Minata Samate Cessouma, the Commissioner for Political Affairs, African Union Commission and will be organized in collaboration with the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR).
