Kigali, Rwanda - 17 July 2016 - The Twenty seventh (27th) Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government kicked off on 17 July 2016 at the Kigali Convention Centre (KCC), Rwanda, with a strong call for unity and love for the continent. The opening ceremony was marked by a symbolic act of Pan-Africanism with the launch of the African Union (AU) passport aimed at facilitating the free movement of people on the continent. H.E. Mr.

Thank you for your invitation and your collective efforts to address the crisis in South Sudan.

Let me begin by saying I was not planning to be in Kigali, but I am here because there is a crisis and I am here because we need to urgently address it together.

I know many of you have worked hard to secure peace for the world’s youngest country – and I know all of us agree that we cannot afford South Sudan slipping back into a civil war.
