The Ethics Office
The African Union Ethics Office was established in July 2016. It is an independent an autonomous body superintending ethical matters in all African Union Organs, institutions and offices. The office is managed and directed by the Chief of Ethics who reports to the Permanent Representative Committee (PRC) Sub-Committee on Ethics through the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
Key Goals of the Ethics Office
The main goals of the Ethics office are:
To cultivate an enduring respect for and adherence to ethical principles and standards derived from the African Union values in order to enhance the protection of staff and the integrity of the Union as well as promote good governance.
To ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization in the delivery of its mandate through awareness, understanding and compliance with the African Union ethical values and principles; regulations, rules and procedures.
The Role of the Ethics Office
The Ethics office is not a judicial body to decide on cases nor is it a police unit investigating misconduct; it is a body that advises on ways of enhancing good behavior through education and training. In this regard, it leans more on the preventative side and providing moral compass for elected officials and staff members in the delivery of the mandate of the Union. The Office does not replace the functions of the administrative justice bodies of the Union, it complements their effectiveness and defer to their competence following the outcome of an in inquiry into a certain matter.

To advise the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and competent authorities in other Organs on all ethical matters that touch and concern the interest and integrity of the Union and its elected officials and staff members

Bill of Rights
The Union guarantees minimum protection of any elected official or staff member who is under investigation or inquiry for the violation of the Code of Ethics and Conduct and any other relevant instrument;
