Press Release

African Union Commission with the US Agency for International Development and US East Africa Geothermal Partnership Co-organize workshop on Model Enabling Framework for Geothermal Development.

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania- 29 August, 2014 - The African Union Commission (AUC) through its Department of Infrastructure and Energy in collaboration with the Unites States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Unites States East Africa Geothermal Partnership (US-EAGP) organized a three days’ workshop on “key attributes of model enabling framework for Geothermal Development” held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on 27-29 August 2014.

The Workshop was designed to inform and sensitize senior government geothermal program managers, policy-makers, regulators and finance personnel who have responsibilities in relation to promoting geothermal-related private sector participation and public-private partnerships. The objective of the three day Workshop was to enable the participating country representatives to increase the pace of utility scale geothermal development through a coordinated AUC strategy to address challenges to private sector participation in the East African Rift Zone. This was achieved by introducing participants to the elements and benefits of adopting market-oriented approaches to development and long-term use of geothermal resources by optimizing the participation of both public and private sectors in geothermal project development.

In his opening remarks AUC Energy Expert Mr. Rashid Ali Abdallah highlighted the achievements of the Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility which has resulted in the award of grants valued at USD 20 million to successful developers in Ethiopia and Kenya. He further encouraged developers to make use of the AUC hosted GRMF grant fund to further the development of the geothermal resource in the region. In his opening remarks USAID Senior Energy Advisor Mr. John Garrison recalled the great partnership that exists between the AUC and USAID through the Power Africa Initiative. He further expressed USAID support in promoting geothermal development in the region. The workshop brought together participants from the AUC, African Development Bank, Power Africa, USAID, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania.
