INVITATION TO REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDIA

Who: The Women, Gender and Development Directorate (WGDD)

Where: KHARTOUM, SUDAN

Objectives:

The 1st STC is to consider the rule of procedure of STC on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

This meeting will also consider and approve the projects under Fund for African Women (FAW), consider and adopt the report of mid-term review of the African Women Decade (AWD), the Plan of Action on the Implementation of the Declaration of the AU Heads of State and Government on the AU Theme for 2015”Year of Women’s Empowerment and Development Towards Africa Agenda 2063” and Johannesburg Call for Action, the Concept Note and Framework of the AU Theme for 2016 among others.

Participants: AU Ministers of Gender and Women’s Affairs and their Experts, invited participants as well as AUC staff.

Expected outcomes:

- The Rules of procedure of STC on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment adopted

- Projects under FAW considered and approved

- Mid-term review Report of AWD adopted

- The Plan of Action on the Implementation of the Declaration of the AU Heads of State and Government on the AU Theme for 2015”Year of Women’s Empowerment and Development Towards Africa Agenda 2063 adopted

Background:

The African Union Commission is convening the 1ST Specialized Technical Committee (STC) on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) which will be held in Khartoum, Sudan from 25 to 29 November 2015. During the 5th Ordinary Session of AU Ministers in Charge of Gender and Women’s Affairs held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 13th May 2013, the Commission informed the meeting that the Commission is requested to implement HOSG decision to establish the STC on GEWE by 2015 and there would no longer be any Ministerial meetings as the Ministers would be convened as STCs.

The 1st STC on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment will consider among others:

1. The Rules of Procedure of the STC on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment;

2. The outcomes of the review of the Projects under the 2015 Theme of AWD “Education, Science and Technology”;

3. The outcomes of the review of projects under the 2014 AWD Theme;

4. Mid-Term Report of African Women’s Decade 2010-2014 ;

5. The 2015 AU Theme Implementation;

6. The Plan of Action on the Implementation of the Declaration of the AU Heads of State and Government on the AU Theme for 2015”Year of Women’s Empowerment and Development Towards Africa Agenda 2063 and Johannesburg Call for Action;

7. Concept Note and Framework of the AU Theme for 2016;

8. Updating on the SDGEA and Protocol of the Women’s Rights Progress;

9. Consideration of preparations for January 2016 Pre-Summit on Gender.
