Background: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, His Excellency Moussa Faki Mahamat, has deployed an African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) to observe the Legislative Elections in the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria scheduled for 4 May 2017.

The AUEOM is led by H. E. Dileita Mohamed Dileita, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Djibouti and compromises of one hundred and fifty (150) short-term observers (STOs) drawn from members of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) of the African Union, the Pan-African Parliament, Election Management Bodies, Civil Society Organisations working in the area of democracy, governance and elections in Africa, Think Tanks, and independent election experts.

The objectives of the AUEOM are to make an independent, objective and impartial assessment of the 2017 National Assembly Elections; and to offer recommendations for improvement of future elections that will contribute to the consolidation of democratic governance, peace and stability in the country.

Media representatives in Algeria are invited to take part and cover the Press Conference.
