WHAT: Africa CDC weekly engagement with the media to provide critical update on the coordinated efforts by African Union Member States to implement the joint continental strategy on COVID-19. It also highlights key steps taken to support the PACT initiative across countries and other countermeasures by Africa CDC and other partners in response to the pandemic and to minimize fatality due to the disease in Africa.

Background Information
The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to about 215 countries and territories with more than 16 million cases and claimed more than 655,000 lives worldwide. Nearly 872,000 cases have been reported in all 55 African countries, with over 18,000 deaths. Africa CDC is working with Member States to ensure appropriate response to the outbreak in their countries. Thursday’s briefing will also feature the Director General of the Nigeria Centres for Disease Control, NCDC to provide updated information about ongoing public health actions and other counter-measures taken by the NCDC and government of Nigeria in response to the pandemic across Africa’s most populous country.

Kindly note that there will be French and Portuguese interpretations during the weekly briefing going forward.
