PRESS CONFERENCE ON THE PRELIMINARY STATEMENT OF THE AFRICAN UNION ELECTION OBSERVATION MISSION TO THE ZAMBIA

WHAT: Press Conference to release the Preliminary Statement of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM), following the political election held in Zambia

WHEN: Saturday 14 August 2021

TIME: 11:am

WHERE: Sarovar Hotel, in Lusaka, Republic of Zambia

WHO: Organised by the African Union (AU), the press conference will be addressed by the Head of the African Union Election Observation Mission to Zambia, H.E Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, former President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, in the presence of the former Vice President of the Republic Uganda, H.E. Mrs. Specioza Naigaga Wandira Kazibwe and the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS), H.E. Amb. Bankole Adeoye, and other guests.

Journalists are invited to attend and cover the press conference on Saturday 14 August 2021, at 11: am in the Sarovar Hotel in Zambia.

Worth noting that, the deployment of AUEOM to Zambia is in line with the AU’s mandate of promoting and deepening democracy and democratic elections on the continent, as enshrined in relevant African Union (AU) instruments such as the 2007 African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance; the 2002 OAU/AU Declaration on Principles Governing Democratic Elections in African; and the 2002 AU Guidelines for Election Observation and Monitoring Mission. It is also in line with the aspirations of the AU Agenda 2063, particularly Aspiration No.3, which aims to ensure good governance, democracy, and respect for human rights, justice and rule of law on the continent.
The objective of the AUEOM is to observe and ensure that the political election in Zambia was transparent, free, and fair, in accordance with the national, regional and international standards for democratic elections.
