Who: The Launch of the Labour Migration Statistics Report in Africa Third Edition, which will be organized as a side event in the margins of the preparatory meeting for the V Global Conference on Child Labour in Pretoria, South Africa, will be hosted by the Department of Health, Humanitarian Affairs & Social Development (HHS) of the African Union Commission (AUC) in collaboration with the Government of South Africa.

Why: The production of the 3rd edition of the Labour Migration Statistics report is a milestone on improving the availability of labour migration data for policy development in Africa. Therefore, the launch of this report goes a long way in showing the collaborative support from Member states, RECs, development and implementing partners of the Joint Labour Migration Programme(JLMP) on improving labour migration governance in the continent through utilization and development of evidence-based policies from the data collected from the report as well as reporting on the Migration Policy Framework for Africa (MPFA), SDGs and Agenda 2063 indicators.

The report contains detailed information on labour migration statistics in the continent that is enhanced and enriched from the previous editions. This was achieved through exploring and sourcing for more data from Member States, utilizing additional sources containing labour migration data and making some adjustments on inconsistencies noted during data collection in some of the Member States.

Objectives: The objectives of the meeting are:

  • Launch of the 3rd Edition of the Labour migration statistics report in Africa;
  • Dissemination of the report; and
  • To share the best practices, challenges and data gaps existing in the collection of labour migration data during the production of the third edition of the Labour migration statistics report in Africa.
