WHAT: Commemoration of the 7th Africa Day of School Feeding: “Building resilience in nutrition on the African continent: Accelerate the human capital, social and economic development".

WHY:   Owing to the AU Theme and considering the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the nutrition, health and education of school-age children and on rural livelihoods and food systems, the 2022 African Day of School Feeding will be commemorated under the theme "Nutrition and human capital development in Africa through increased investment in home grown school feeding”. The Theme will provide an opportunity to reinforce and leverage home-grown school meals programmes to promote nutritious food for school children, and to creating a powerful force to bringing us one step closer to our shared goal of a world with Zero Hunger.

THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF 7th ADSF

  • Celebrate African commitment and leadership in the Global School Meals Coalition, which was called to live during the 2021 ADSF Celebration and already counts with more than 60 country members, half of them from Africa.  
  • Showcase ambitious commitments from governments and share experiences from leading countries that demonstrate plans on how countries will improve and scale its current programming, responding to the health, nutrition and education needs of children.
  • Present and launch the continental AUDA-NEPAD Home Grown School Feeding guideline, which can support governments in strengthening and implementing of their programmes. 
  • Identify ways to reinforce collaboration between key partners and the key government Ministries in charge of education, agriculture, nutrition, procurement, and social protection aiming to explore the possibilities of positioning school feeding within a wider nutrition System.
  • Share lessons learnt and school feeding best practices on the context of nutrition resilience, from the continent and beyond, that can inspire and inform political decisions. Showcase key initiatives carried out at continental, regional, and at national levels to implementing nutrition sensitive homegrown school feeding.

PARTICIPANTS:  

Participants for the event are expected to comprise 150 to 200 individuals, including Ministers and experts from government institutions of AU Member States, AU Commissions, ED Directors, CEO’s, AUDA- NEPAD, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), UN Agencies, multilateral agencies, international financial institutions, Civil Society Organizations (CSO), donor agencies, academic and research institutions, other professional associations and individual experts.
