      BACKGROUND

In 2019, the African Union Commission (AUC) and African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) were tasked to lead the preparation of biennial progress reports on the five ten-year implementation plans. The first continental-level report was launched by H.E. Alassane Ouattara President of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire. AU Champion on Agenda 2063 H.E. Moussa Faki Chairperson: African Union Commission 2063 at the 33rd AU Summit in February 2020

The first continental-level report that consolidates progress reports from 31 out of 55 AU Member States, covering 56% of the continent, and six Regional Economic Communities. The report presents an analysis of progress made on the implementation of Agenda 2063 against the 2019 targets.

In 2022 the second Continental Report on the Implementation of Agenda 2063 was launched in February this year to build on the 1st report and ascertain progress made so far. The report consolidates progress reports from 38 of the 55 AU Member States. The report analyses progress made on the implementation of Agenda 2063 against 2021 targets.

Following the launch of the continental report, the Office of Strategic Planning and Delivery (African Union Commission) convened the Technical Working Group (TWG) planning meeting on implementation of Agenda 2063, subsequent to the Executive Council Decision EX.CL/Dec.1164(XL). The decision called upon the African Union Commission to engage all stakeholders who are ,African Development Bank Group (AfDB) ,the Joint Secretariat Support Office (JSSO) and the AUDA-NEPAD to ensure the African financing and mobilization of institutional expertise for the two processes of Evaluation of Agenda 2063 First Ten Year Implementation Plan (FTYIP) and the development of the Second Ten Year Implementation Plan (STYIP). The same decision also directed African Union Commission (AUC) and African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) to lead the two processes with the support of other members of the TWG. The outcome of the meeting was to launch the processes, division of labour and institutional resource commitments for the evaluation of the FTYIP and preparation of the STYIP of Agenda 2063.

It is against this back drop that the AUDA-NEPAD is inviting the Media to a virtual Media Briefing on Agenda 2063 to apprise the Media fraternity on implementation of Agenda 2063, progress made to date with particular focus on the 10-year plans.

      NOTE TO EDITORS

Ms Bekele-Thomas is the first woman to lead the African Union’s development agency. She was appointment and endorsed as the new Chief Executive Officer of AUDA-NEPAD by the African Union Heads of State and Government during the Thirty-Fifth Ordinary Session of the African Union summit, in February 2022. Agenda 2063 is Africa’s development blueprint to achieve inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development over a 50-year period. The continent aims to achieve this objective through the realization of five ten-year implementation plans.

The First Ten-Year Implementation Plan of Agenda 2063, spanning 2014 to 2023, outlines a set of goals, priority areas and targets that the continent aims to achieve at national, regional and continental levels. Against this background, the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) were tasked by policy organs of the African Union to coordinate and prepare continental-level biennial performance reports to track progress made towards the goals and targets of Agenda 2063.
