INVITATION TO REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDIA

What:              16th Session of the Committee of Director-Generals of the National Statistics Offices (CoDGs), under 2022 AU the theme; “Strengthening Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security on African Continent: Strengthening Agri-Food Systems, Health and Social Protection Systems for Acceleration of Human, Social and Economic Capital Development”.     

When:             6-8 December 2022

Where:            Malabo, Equatorial Guinea / Sipopo International Conference Centre

Objectives:    The main objectives of the CoDGs are to discuss statistical development in Africa and, through the AU Nutrition year 2022, to celebrate gains made in recent years and secure greater political commitment and investment in nutrition to address the ongoing nutrition challenges related to data availability and gaps.

Participants:

Directors general of the national statistical offices from AU Member States, Regional Economic Communities, statistics training centres, regional and African organisations, UN agencies, sub-regional, regional and international, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations, academic and research institutions, civil society organizations, and others.

Background:

The Committee of Directors-General of African National Statistical Offices (CoDG) was established by the AU 2006 Conference of Ministers of Economy and Finance. CoDG meets annually under the auspices of the African Union Commission to discuss statistical development in Africa and ensure that it follows the premise of using harmonised, reliable, timely, accurate and comparable statistics in a coordinated manner to ensure the effective implementation of the African integration agenda and Agenda 2063.

The 16th Session of CoDGs will debate on issues of statistical development in Africa, including; the progress made on the implementation of the Strategy for the Harmonization of Statistics in Africa, exchange of experiences and best practices on the efforts by regional, and international organizations as well as on countries’ efforts in their quest to support their national, regional, and international development initiatives with quality statistics based on the Peer review developed by AUC, and defining the modalities for the coordination of on-going statistical activities on the continent.

In relation to the AU 2022 theme of Nutrition and Food Security, Session will evaluate and take stock of the progress made in the implementation of the AU commitments on nutrition at continental, regional and national level and the bottlenecks that are impeding reaching nutrition goals. It will also facilitate mutual learning and experience sharing among AU Member States, RECs and through the South-South and Triangular Cooperation Framework on data production, compilation and dissemination on the 2022 AU Theme.

Journalists are invited to cover the opening & closing of the 16th Session of the Committee of Director-Generals of the National Statistics Offices on Tuesday 6th and Thursday 8th December 2022, in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
