Background

On 26 May 2021 marks twenty (20) years after the entry into force of the AU Constitutive Act. it is important to take stock of the progress made in achieving the objectives outlined in the AU Constitutive Act and challenges encountered in their implementation.

The commemoration will particularly reflect on the key factors that facilitated the transformation of the OAU into the AU, with particular emphasis on their legal characterisation and reception, both in the negotiations leading up to the adoption of the Constitutive Act and in its provisions.

Examination of the implementation of the Constitutive Act, both retrospectively and prospectively, will also form an important part of the discussions, particularly through the identification of successes and challenges encountered.
